A hospitality worker has edged out a property developer by 77 votes to retain a seat on Adelaide City Council for the Greens.

Lord Mayor explains council budget

A newly elected Adelaide city councillor wants the footpaths fixed.

Keiran Snape, the assistant convener of the Greens in South Australia, yesterday won a supplementary election by 77 votes.

“My number one thing will be the footpaths,” said Mr Snape, pictured. “Some side streets are in very poor condition; it’s bad for accessibility.”

Mr Snape replaces Robert Simms, who has taken up the Greens seat in the Legislative Council.

Mr Snape, a hospitality worker, has lived in the CBD for seven years, is president of the City South Association and on the committee of the Adelaide Park Lands Association.

Voters were “sick and tired of the toxicity of the council”, he said.

He looked forward to working with councillors Greg Mackie, Phillip Martin, Helen Donovan and Anne Moran.

He also “extended the hand of friendship” to work cooperatively with the councillors who form the majority faction.

Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor welcomed Mr Snape to the council and said “there is a great deal of hard work ahead of us before the next general election as we continue to support the city’s recovery”.

The Electoral Commission of SA said 17.5 per cent of the 27,963 enrolled voters participated in the election.

Mr Snape received a quarter, 1126, of the first-preference votes, garnering 1753 votes after preferences, edging out Kel Spencer, managing director of Spencer Property Group.

Seven men stood for the area councillor position.

Mr Snape stood for the Greens in the federal seat of Makin in 2016, attracting 4.7 per cent of first-preference votes.
