E-Scooters will come to North Adelaide from January 30

Up to 500 e-scooters will be allowed in North Adelaide as part of a nine-month trial as workers in the area look forward to hailing the new options.

E-scooters are ready to roll into North Adelaide.

The State Government will give the trial the final sign off tomorrow afternoon, which will allow the scooters to operate until October 31, 2020.

The Government wants to roll out the scooters permanently, but that would be subject to results of the trial.

Under Adelaide City Council guidelines, no more than 500 can be deployed at any one time, except when there are events when a further 100 can be out for use.

Transport Minister Stephan Knoll expected the community to welcome the e-scooters, especially as Adelaide moved into its festival season.

“This year we are expanding the footprint to include North Adelaide and we expect that this will be a boost for vibrancy in North Adelaide during the festival season and beyond,” Mr Knoll said.

“This is great news for the local, restaurants, pubs and shops in North Adelaide because more visitors mean more business which supports more jobs.”

It comes after Adelaide City Council gave providers RIDE and Neuron the green light to operate in the city until February 2022.

Adelaide City Council Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said the extension was “good news” for the area.

“E-scooters really are an excellent option for short distance travel and expansion to North Adelaide will support businesses, residential colleges and institutions that have links into the universities in the CBD,” Ms Verschoor said.

North Adelaide worker Daniela Campanile looked forward to using the e-scooters, especially for getting to and from Adelaide Fringe venues next month.

“I use them in the city and now it will be good to use them in North Adelaide,” Ms Campanile, 36, of Allenby Gardens, says. “But it won’t only be good for workers, it would be good for our customers.”

RIDE chief executive Tom Cooper said e-scooters would improve safety, particularly for doctors and nurses going to and from their cars.

Beam Mobility has to remove its purple scooters by the end of the month, however, it has plans to lodge a formal complaint with the council.
