Supermarket giant Coles is investigating reports of a bird poo problem at one of its CBD stores.
Reports of birds inside Coles Rundle Place have led to hygiene concerns, with the animals nesting above the bakery section of the store.
One shopper told the Advertiser they had raised the issue with a manager after finding bird droppings on a loaf of bread purchased from the store last week.
They claimed the manager said they “couldn’t do anything about it” and the issue had been ongoing for months.
Another shopper said they had lodged a complaint with Coles management.
A Coles spokesman said the company was following up with the store about the unwanted avians.
“Coles takes food safety seriously and we work hard to keep a clean environment in our stores,” they said.
“We have an integrated pest management system, which primarily focuses on keeping pests out of our stores, then controlling pests should they find their way into our stores.
“We were concerned to hear about the customer’s experience with a bird at Coles Rundle Place and have reached out to the store so we can address the issue.”
Adelaide City Council’s associate director of regulatory services, Steve Zaluski, said the council had met with Rundle Place and Coles management earlier this year to find a solution to the issue.
However, Mr Zaluski emphasised there had been no breach of food safety standards.
“All interested parties have been working proactively to investigate and put in place solutions,” Mr Zaluski said.
