Climate change activists have vowed to cause disruption across the CBD as part of a week-long global protest.
Extinction Rebellion’s South Australian chapter kicked off its CBD demonstrations, called Spring Rebellion, as it pushes for urgent action on climate change.
However, only around 100 people turned up to the first protest on Gouger St on Tuesday morning.
Indi Wishart, 26, who asked for the honorific Mx as a non-binary identification, said governments were not listening to activists, and was prepared to get arrested to prove the point.
“The time for petitions and marching has passed because it is not achieving anything,” Mx Wishart said.
The group kicked off protests on Monday with 80 cyclists slowly riding from Whitmore Square to King William St to stall traffic.
On Tuesday the group will block traffic on the Gouger St side of the Central Market from 11.45am to raise awareness of how climate change will affect food production.
At the same time on Wednesday, the group will play dead in Rundle Mall; on Thursday, they will disrupt Flinders St by doing the Nutbush about 12.15pm.
The group plans to block traffic at the corner of Rundle Mall and Pulteney St with a party from 5pm on Friday.
Extinction Rebellion SA co-ordinating group member Yarrow Andrews said all events will be “peaceful protesting”.
“We are going to be inconveniencing some people, but climate change is going to be a massive inconvenience,” Dr Andrews, 50, of Torrensville, said.
