City Awards: Charlesworth Nuts, the Adelaide company that’s been growing for 83 years, seeks Hall of Fame

AN iconic Adelaide company set up more than eight decades ago will be considered in the coveted Hall of Fame category in this year’s City Awards – the third to be held. Here is a full list of categories.

Nominations are now open for the third annual City Awards.

THE late Herb Charlesworth was already running two Adelaide Central Market stalls before he took a chance on adding another small business to his portfolio.

Fast-forward 83 years and the business he developed — Charlesworth Nuts — is now a South Australian institution, operated by Herb’s grandsons Brett and Mark Charlesworth.

“He was already involved in the (Adelaide) Central Market by running a food stall and one other drink stall,” Brett, 57, says.

“A nut business came up for sale and he was looking for another business so he bought into that particular one … and that is the stall we have grown over the years.

“He bought the business, apparently the story goes, to put my grandmother into some work … he thought she could run a business.

“I’m glad he did, because it certainly worked out well for the rest of us.”

Brett and Mark are the third generation of Charlesworth men to run the business, with Mark’s sons Rhys, 33, Kain, 31 and Liam, 27, tipped to take over the business in the future.

“For a long, time it was just the one store, then we started expanding in the 70s and it has continued ever since,” Brett says.

“Three years ago, we ended up in the 1 Rundle Mall site. We are very proud to be at an iconic site … the doorway into Rundle Mall is important to us.”

Charlesworth Nuts will nominate in the City Awards, now in its third year.

The business will apply for the Hall of Fame category — which recognises businesses which have been established for more than 25 years — in the awards, sponsored by the Adelaide City Council.

Last year, family-owned business Haigh’s Chocolates won the Hall of Fame category.

Nominations are now open in 16 categories, spanning favourites from last year’s awards such as best small bar and best new restaurant.

Businesses have almost a month to nominate in the open categories, which close on Friday, May 19, before the awards are opened up to a public vote.

Winners will then be selected based on a public vote and the scrutiny of a panel of expert judges before being presented with their award at a glittering ceremony in July.

So, if you’re a city business or work, study or play in the CBD or North Adelaide, now’s your time to speak up and submit a nomination.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony on Monday, July 10.
