Adelaide’s Lunar New Year street party festivities will go ahead this weekend amid concerns over the coronavirus outbreak.
It comes as SA Health and Chinatown Association of South Australia (CASA) gave the event the final go-ahead on Tuesday afternoon.
A statement provided by the Chinatown Association of South Australia said: “SA Health does not recommend that public gatherings should be cancelled and therefore does not recommend that the Chinatown Lunar New Year party should be cancelled or postponed.”
“People who present with the symptoms of the virus should not attend the event.”
However, The Festival of Spring Concert 2020, which had been scheduled to be held on Friday at a venue on Port Rd and organised by the Chinese Government, has been cancelled, Adelaide City Cr and CASA spokesman Simon Hou said.
“We were planning to have a spring concert and over 1000 tickets were sold, however, the performers are unable to come,” he said.
The Lunar New Year street party, on Moonta St and Gouger St, attracts 40,000 people each year.
There will be live music, market stalls, pop-up food stalls and a traditional lion dance.
Coronavirus, which originated in Hubei Province China, is a respiratory virus that has killed at least 106 people and has been spreading globally.
Adelaide’s Lunar New Year street party will be held on Saturday, February 1, from noon-9.30pm.
