A LANEWAY off Rundle Mall is earmarked as the city’s newest gourmet and retail hot spot — on the heels of successful revamps of Leigh St and Peel St.

TWIN St is next in line to be part of the city’s laneway revolution.
The side street, which runs between Rundle Mall and Grenfell St, has remained fairly untouched — unlike prominent city laneways such as James Place or Leigh St.
Renew Adelaide chief executive Lily Jacobs said the organisation was working with the Rundle Mall Management Authority to encourage entrepreneurs to set up.
“Unique and different retail offerings will be our focus for Twin St,” she said.
“We won’t be looking to do something that is a repeat of what is already on offer in the (Rundle Mall) precinct.
“Basically, we are hoping to get some cool things happening there.”
She said Renew was looking at a series of sleeve retail shops — small semi-permanent outdoor stores that can fold away and be locked up after hours.
Ms Jacobs said she was in discussions with entrepreneurs about what types of business could be established on Twin St.
Rundle Mall Management Authority chief executive Ian Darbyshire said Twin St had plenty of potential. “We really want that area to become the next focus (for activation),” he said.
“Laneways like James Place have been a great success and we want to see that continue for other areas that run off the Mall.
“It could have some outdoor dining in the future and we are working putting sleeve retail stores there.”
Deputy Lord Mayor Houssam Abiad said redeveloping areas such as Twin St and Lindes Lane were included in the Rundle Mall masterplan and he hoped they could be done in the next three years.
“One of our main priorities is to redo Gawler Place but I’m hopeful that we can get through other laneways like Twin St by the end of the (council) term,” he said.
“As more people start using Twin St there will be a greater need to redevelop it to improve amenity.”
Mr Darbyshire said he also wanted Hindmarsh Square to become more family friendly. “Twin St (runs parallel) to the Square and we want to improve these areas one by one,” he said.
