HELPING to secure the Commonwealth Games, completing a redevelopment of the old Le Cornu site in North Adelaide and improving the market district will be key parts of Lord Mayor Martin Haese’s re-election bid.

He has officially begun seeking support for another four-year term. He told The Advertiser he believed he had fixed much of the “dysfunction” that had plagued the council previously and his goal was to complete the job he had started.

“I will deliver a development of 88 O’Connell St, of which the community can be justifiably proud,” he said.

“I will unify the council around a shared vision for high-quality residential amenity, stronger communities and greater competitiveness for business.

“I will roll out 10 Gigabit Adelaide to create opportunity for current and future generations. We will also explore the most appropriate developments and improvements to the market district, including a redevelopment of the Central Market Arcade.

“I will also work collaboratively with the State Government to ensure an appropriate and timely redevelopment of the former Royal Adelaide Hospital site and I am a very strong advocate for a Commonwealth Games bid.”

Mr Haese became Adelaide’s 63rd Lord Mayor in 2014 after beating incumbent Stephen Yarwood by just 218 votes, following the distribution of preferences.

He will have to see off former councillor Mark Hamilton if he wants to retain his spot in Town Hall.

Busking Martin Haese

Over the past month, rumours have been circulating about a potential “team” of candidates running for council.

Mr Haese said he believed the city’s ratepayers wanted a united council that represented them.

“Today more than ever, people are looking to their leaders for integrity, stability, teamwork and tangible results,” he said.

“That’s what I offer the City of Adelaide. My own style of community leadership puts people first and I welcome like- minded candidates who share these positive values.

“If the critics would like to think that teamwork is a negative thing, it says more about their own self-serving priorities.”

Mr Haese said he would unveil his vision for Adelaide when he formally launches his campaign next month.
