Adelaide City Council is planning to put an 18-hole mini golf course at the North Adelaide public golf course.
A potential 3500sq m site has been chosen next to the Par 3 course on War Memorial Drive, with preliminary consultation due to start with its traditional owners, the Kaurna.
An initial briefing about the mini golf course has been presented to the Kadaltilla/Parklands Authority.
It detailed how golf had exploded in popularity during the pandemic, with numbers of players increasing by 30 per cent nationally.
Annual patronage at the three public golf courses operated by the council had grown to 100,000, compared to 65,000 in recent years.
The briefing said a draft master plan had been developed in 2018 to upgrade the golf courses, one of the council’s major income sources.
The master plan included a mini golf course.
“Mini golf was subsequently identified as the first project that should be progressed given its potential to deliver significant benefits,” it said.
Independent research was commissioned from golf’s controlling body, Golf Australia, and a consultancy, Golf Business Advisory Services.
It found a mini golf course would attract about 42,000 rounds each year.
The likely location of the course was on the putting green at the Par 3 course near the Torrens Weir.
The site was chosen because of the adjacent nine-hole course, existing kiosk and availability of carparking.
The mini golf course would take up 3500sq m while another 400sq m would be used for an outdoor function area.
“The design and construction of a mini golf facility is approximately 12 months,” said the report.
“As such, if the project progresses, it may be completed within the next financial year.”
The report will be presented to elected members for discussion at a workshop.
