World champion woodchopper David Foster says the veteran competitor who died at the Royal Adelaide Show on Saturday received immediate medical care but nothing could be done to save him.

“I’ve been competing against him for decades and such a lovely fellow,” Mr Foster said.

The 62-year-old from Tasmania, who is a competitor and compere at the Show, said the woodchopping community was still in shock over the death of the axeman, who is well known on both sides of the Tasman.

“Everything that could have been done for him was done,” said Mr Foster, the winner of more than 1000 woodchopping titles.

“It’s just one of those things. He’d finished competing and was sitting back watching others wielding the axe when he appears to have suffered a heart attack.”

The Advertiser understands the dead man was a 67-year-old New Zealand logger and a regular visitor to Australia.
