A dangerous Greenock intersection – the site of three fatalities in the past five years – will be upgraded in a bid to improve safety.

The Federal Government has given Light Regional Council $400,000 to upgrade the intersection of Roennfeldt and Seppeltsfield roads.

The work will include the reconstruction of three curves to improve lines of sight, as well as the sealing the Greenock end of Roennfeldt Road.

The roads will also be widened and some trees will be removed.

Light Regional Mayor Bill O’Brien welcomed the move.

“From a council perspective, we think it’s a very generous offer from the Federal Government, we’re very happy to receive that and look forward to getting started,” he said.

Mr O’Brien said the upgrade would have a significant boost on tourism.

“The road itself is going to be a great strategic link, not only for the people who live on the road where it’ll be safer for them, but for tourism as well,” he said.

“It tidies up that block around Seppeltsfield and Stonewell Road, which we are also upgrading, we’ve got the funding for that.

“That makes that beautiful square that people can drive around.”

Mr O’Brien said the work would begin “very, very shortly” but could not confirm a start date.
