Vision of a B-double truck careering through a Barossa intersection – which locals describe as dangerous – has reignited calls for safety upgrades.

Shocking footage of a truck careering through a give way sign at a Nuriootpa intersection has reignited calls for safety upgrades at the junction, which locals describe as dangerous.

Vision captured last month shows the B-double truck ignoring the sign at the intersection of Samuel and Greenock roads.

The Nuriootpa junction has been the scene of 15 vehicle collisions in the past five years, according to SA police.

Nuriootpa businessman Neville Linke has lived near the intersection for 18 years and said he has seen a marked increase in traffic since 2015.

“We’ve got a huge problem here and no one's listening, the B-double route was redirected to Samuel Road in about 2015 and we’ve seen a lot more heavy traffic since then,” Mr Linke said.

“But the overall traffic has increased and is only going to continue to increase as our population grows.”

“Someone is going to get killed on this road, last year we’ve had nine accidents. What does it take to get it looked at properly?”

Mr Linke said truck drivers had become impatient with the crossing and were intentionally racing through it.

He said, although trucks are of concern, most of the crashes he’s witnessed have occurred as a result of car drivers being confused with vehicles indicating to turn into the petrol station.

“All of the last 9 crashes I’ve seen have been from T-bones coming out of Samuel Road.” Mr Linke said.

“I’ve seen scrapped plans for a roundabout here which would have made perfect sense, this is 50 times busier than Seppeltsfield Road, which has a new roundabout.”

“I don’t know why they refuse to consider the solution, it would work perfectly.”

The truck incident comes as local MP Tony Piccolo, who is part of the campaign for safety upgrades, obtained documents through freedom of information revealing then Transport Minister Stephan Knoll, was aware of increased traffic at the crossing.

In July, Mr Knoll said the Department of Transport and Infrastructure advised the current speed limit was considered appropriate for the conditions and no changes were being considered.

However in correspondence from August 2019, Mr Knoll acknowledged a 700 daily vehicle traffic increase had been recorded between 2013 and 2018.

The increase from 5400 to 6100 vehicles using the intersection every day included a 50 per cent increase in heavy vehicle use.

Transport Minister Corey Wingard, who replaced Mr Knoll, previously said the department had analysed the intersection, which revealed a “low level of crashes which does not highlight this intersection for an upgrade based on safety grounds.”
