Coopers Butchers in Burra have taken out top honours as the Barossa, Clare and Galwer’s best butcher but this may come as no surprise to Burra locals.

The Market Street butcher came in at number one in our in our Delicious Local poll with Matt Preston.

Casey Cooper, who began the business in 2009 after he took over shop from his old employer, said his favourite part of the job was making sure customers were happy with every single cut they walk out with.

The initial stages of business in the early years were the most nerve racking according to Mr Cooper, but living locally and diversifying their meats over the years has earnt the store considerable support.

Mr Cooper, who runs the business with his wife Melissa Cooper, said that it was “unreal that we won, particularly since people voted all around the state, we’re very chuffed.”

“We’ve been very lucky with all the support we’ve had throughout the COVID period, the surrounding areas have really looked after us as we’ve done our best to look after them,” he said.

The group were also quick to implement masks and sanitiser in their shop to make customers feel safe, and say that the lead up to Christmas has been an increasingly busy period.

Mr Cooper said that after over 11 years in the business, they would be renovating in the new year, but said that the changes won’t affect the way things are done.

“We like to keep it pretty traditional and keep our shop front interactive with the butchers, we want people to see us cutting meat and preparing what they are ultimately buying,” Mr Cooper said.
