The votes are in and a Nuriootpa restaurant has been crowned the best pizza place in the region, beating stiff competition across the Barossa, Clare and Gawler.
Ember Pizza co-owner Peter Little said the team was thrilled with the win and honoured people took the time to acknowledge the business.
“We couldn’t be happier honestly, the level of support from people makes us all very proud,” Mr Little said.
“We have a wonderful team, it’s a friendly vibe and I think people really engage with us, plus we’re lucky to have a great location right in the heart of the Barossa.”
Ember Pizza is situated in the Provenance Barossa building which once housed Penfolds wines operations but now serves as an outlet for a variety of fine food and drink experiences.
Co-owner Neil Bullock, who also owns Barossa Distilling, initially discovered the dining concept in Hong Kong, where he first came across wood-oven Neapolitan style pizza.
“He actually bought the top of the line Italian made pizza oven straight away, which is what you see behind us,” Mr Little said.
“He approached me about the idea and the rest is history, it’s been such a learning process ever since.”
Mr Little originally worked at Appalachian at Louise, before starting Harvest Kitchen in 2015 and eventually foraying into the pizza market with Ember Pizza.
“We first made our own sourdough at my other restaurant, Harvest Kitchen, and we now have our own live culture for sourdough,” he said.
“Each pizza has a 72 hour fermented sourdough base, the base is part of the whole experience.
“Pizza is the number one selling food in the world, but there’s such a range out there and I think what we do is very unique to the region.
“For some people who’ve only grown up with a Dominos or Pizza Hut style pizza, the challenge is getting the message across at just how different what we do is.”
Pivotal to the experience is the open lawn areas available for families, where children can run and play while parents enjoy pizza and drinks.
“There isn’t a whole lot of family friendly venues in the Barossa so we’re proud to facilitate that,” Mr Little said.
