A Barossa Valley teacher and father of four asked a person he believed to be a 14-year-old girl if he could set her “naughty homework” and offered to meet her by pretending “to be your dad or maybe uncle”, court documents allege.
In court documents released to The Advertiser, SA Police allege primary school teacher Clayton John Page began sending explicit messages via the social media apps Snapchat and Kik on Thursday last week.
They allege that, while messaging under the username ceejayinsa, Mr Page asked his target if she had much sexual experience, and told her he’d “fantasised about finding someone young to teach, like sexually.”
However, the documents allege, the person to whom he was speaking was not a 14-year-old girl but a covert member of the state’s Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team.
Mr Page, 57, of Tanunda, was arrested on Thursday and has yet to plead to one count of communicating to make a child amenable to sexual activity.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Mr Page has been teaching primary-aged students at schools including Waikerie Primary, Melaleuca Park Primary at Mount Gambier and Mark Oliphant College in Munno Para, which is listed as where he currently teaches.
His profile also states he acted as a school counsellor at the Murray Bridge North School in 2011.
On Thursday, Mr Page was released on bail after the Elizabeth Magistrates Court was told he would be supported by his family and community.
On Friday, the court granted The Advertiser’s application for access to further documentation outlining the extent of JACET’s case against Mr Page.
The documents allege that, between August 31 and September 5 this year at Tanunda, he “made a communication for a prurient purpose” and “with the intention of making a child amenable to sexual activity.”
They allege the first of his communications with the covert officer was made via the online platform Chat IW under the username HamniDady4inSA, and then moved to Snapchat and Kik.
“So … 14 … Is that like year 9?” he allegedly wrote.
“But I have never chatted with anyone your age. So I wasn’t sure what you’d think if I said it turns me on a bit.
“Cool. Just let me know when u have to go. I’ll assume if u ever disappear in a hurray (sic) it’s a mum thing. Lol.
“And delete chats if u need – does she ever look at your phone.”
The documents further allege Mr Page asked the girl: “Can I be naughty and set you some shower homework?”
In another message, the documents allege, Mr Page “confessed” to the girl that he was a teacher.
“I have a small confession … hope it doesn’t freak you out. Makes our chatting even naughtier – I’m a teacher,” court documents allege he wrote.
“Wag school on Friday and I’ll meet u lol. I can pretend to be your dad or maybe uncle.”
The documents allege that, when JACET detectives attended Mr Page’s home, he was “the sole occupant”.
They allege he provided the PIN for his mobile phone but “declined to provide passwords and PIN numbers for a tablet and laptop” in his home.
The documents allege that, upon examination of Mr Page’s phone, JACET detectives found “the open Snapchat application with the alleged message thread” visible.
They allege that, following his arrest, Mr Page “declined to answer any questions outside of providing his PIN numbers for access to devices”.
Mr Page will face the Adelaide Magistrates Court in December.
