A shock social media announcement from a beloved Gawler garden centre has revealed the family is closing their business after generations in business.
On Thursday, Milton Vadoulis, owner of Vadoulis Garden Centre, took to social media in a video announcing the news.
“After 64 years, three generations and two sites, it is with a heavy heart and mixed emotions that I have to announce the closure of our Gawler operation,” Mr Vadoulis said.
“I’d like to thank you, all our beautiful loyal customers, our fantastic staff and wonderful suppliers for a great journey and wonderful memories.
“For me personally, after running the business for 47 years, it is time to hang up my secateurs.”
Vadoulis Garden Centre has operated since 1960 and been a fixture in the Gawler community since 1969 after growing too large for its original Barossa location.
The 4000 sqm site is stocked with a range of plants, outdoor furniture, giftware, books and jewellery and has been staffed by a team of 15 full-time and casual workers.
“On behalf of my family, I’d like to say a thank you, and welcome you in to perhaps pick up a bargain,” Mr Vadoulis said.
The post received hundred of likes since its publishing, with customers and other businesses offering words of support and sharing their sadness at the community’s loss.
Karen Mayhew Schlein commented: “Will be so sorry to see you go, it’s a huge loss for Gawler, such a lovely place to shop and wander.”
Amanda from Barrow and Bench Mitre 10 wrote: “You should be proud of the welcoming garden retail experience you created over many years Milton.”
Tracey Loveridge said she knew the day was coming, “but can’t imagine Gawler without you here.”
“Thousands and thousands of gardens locally and afar, are a testament to you, your family and your exceptional staff. Go well Milton, good luck in the next chapter,” Ms Loveridge said.
McCourts Garden Centre described Mr Vadoulis as “a leading light in our industry and inspired and mentored our business from when we started 26 years ago”.
“Your advice is always been valuable and we have great memories over the years. Hope you enjoy your retirement and Thankyou for your advice and friendship over the years from Christine and the team @mccourts_garden_centre.”
The centre is running a closing-down sale and offering 30 per cent off plants, pots, garden hardware and gift wares, while the cafe will continue to operate as usual until Sunday, June 30.
“Come down to pick up a bargain and to say goodbye,” Mr Vadoulis said.
