An Adelaide Plains man facing 36 counts of rape and 37 other criminal charges is a former police officer.

The Messenger can reveal Anthony Dunn, who is allegedly responsible for a four-year spree of sexual assaults, is a retired former member of SA Police.

When contacted, an SA Police spokesman would not deny Mr Dunn’s association with the government agency.

“As there are pending criminal charges and the matter is before the courts, we can’t make any comment,” he said.

The spokesman would not confirm how long Mr Dunn was an officer, the rank he held or when he retired.

Mr Dunn first faced court at Elizabeth in July, when his lawyer made an application for bail while confronting a slew of rape, sexual assault, assault and gun offences.

In total, Mr Dunn was charged with 36 counts of rape, nine of indecent assault, 11 of assault, six of aggravated assault with a weapon, five of threatening to kill or endanger life (two aggravated), two of detaining a person to commit an indictable offence, one of aggravated assault causing harm and three firearms offences.

During a tense bail hearing, during which Mr Dunn often became agitated, a police prosecutor detailed the allegations.

He told the court Mr Dunn, during the four-year period, allegedly handcuffed the female victim to shelving in his home before sexually assaulting her.

The prosecutor alleged Mr Dunn regularly used a handgun to force the woman to perform sex acts on him and on one occasion sexually assaulted her with a gun.

There was also an alleged attack which occurred in the toilets at a local football grand final.

Mr Dunn was denied bail in July before being granted supervised bail at a residential address on September 13.

Last week, through his lawyer Casey Isaacs, he made an application to have his bail varied so he could go on holiday to the Riverland.

Before Mr Isaacs could get through the request, Magistrate Simon Smart told him there was nothing within his bail agreement to stop him going and Mr Isaacs withdrew the application.

Mr Dunn is expected to return to court in December.
