Wine country has just added another feather to its cap with an unique new accommodation offering you just can’t get anywhere else. See inside and how to book.

All aboard! A regional train station has been kitted out as a unique, luxury Airbnb for large groups.

The Kapunda train station has been reinvigorated thanks to a $250,000 renovation by an entrepreneur with an eye for design.

The grand building has come to life, with seven exquisitely designed functional rooms, a sophisticated kitchen and multiple outdoor areas surrounding the station built in 1860.

Bridget Kimber, a business consultant from Melbourne (turned Kapunda local) bought the national and state heritage listed property in August last year.

Prior to her purchasing it the historic building had been used as a private residence for more than two decades.

Ms Kimber said before committing to the project she made sure she would be able to complete the renovations she knew would be necessary

“I made sure I did all my homework, spoke to the local regional development group and looked into what I can and can’t do to a heritage building before buying,” Ms Kimber said.

“My design mantra was to take out anything that‘s not essential and let the building talk for itself, all the rooms are so grand and large, it has such a great feel.”

The station operated until 1996, was converted into a residential dwelling and bed and breakfast, before in August 2019, it came back onto the market.

Ms Kimber has been crafting unique accommodation experiences as a creative outlet, including a cottage, boat and a Melbourne apartment, for the past 10 years.

“Before I found this property I wasn’t actually looking for something to renovate on such a large scale, but when I saw this property I had to take the opportunity,” she said.

“Who wouldn't want to stay here, the size and scale of it is fantastic, there's exceptional spaces, everything is big generous and private, plus it’s the only group accommodation available.”

Having opened in May, reviews from customers have been matching Ms Kimber’s enthusiasm and she said she is excited to draw people to a fascinating part of South Australia.

“So far every booking that’s come here said they wouldn't have come up this way otherwise, Kapunda is such a fantastic base for exploring being 15 minutes from the Barossa Valley or 40 to the Clare Valley.”

Aside from a luxury getaway, the new attraction will also see weddings and functions use its nearly 100m long platform.
“It’s also become really popular for a range of uses, we have a fashion photo shoot here next week,” Ms Kimber said.
You can book the station – luxury group accommodation here. Prices start from around $800 a night.
