A drug dealer who is trying to get help for his addiction was caught when he sold methamphetamine to an undercover police officer.
The court heard Ali Alzuain, 60, trafficked methamphetamine six times between November 9 and January 6 at Brompton.
Anthony Williams, for Alzuain, said Alzuain would be contesting his seventh drug trafficking charge and they were also applying for bail.
Magistrate Simon Smart seemed surprised.
“He’s just plead guilty to trafficking methamphetamine, they’re no longer allegations,” Mr Smart said.
Mr Williams told the court that Alzuain had started rehabilitation earlier this year, as well as ongoing counselling.
The court heard Alzuain’s offending had resulted from his drug addiction.
“These are all – I describe them as undercover sales to a police officer, introduced by a member of his family,” Mr Williams said.
“It’s street level dealing.
“Yes, he will ultimately serve a sentence of imprisonment but he does the community a service by completing his rehabilitation.”
Mr Smart said he could rehabilitate in jail.
“Well if rehabilitation was simply abstinence, no one coming out of the prison system would relapse … he needs intensive supervision and counselling,” Mr Williams replied.
Alzuain, of Brompton, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday to six counts of drug trafficking.
A police prosecutor opposed the bail application, saying the seventh contested charge had allegedly occurred after Alzuain was discharged from rehabilitation.
“On March 11, police attended and searched his home address and found a drink bottle containing what’s alleged to be 200ml of butanediol,” the police prosecutor said.
Mr Williams said Alzuain initially believed the substance was medication prescribed for his back pain.
“He had a 300kg window fall on his back,” he said.
“He doesn’t know what that drug is … he denies possession of that.”
Mr Smart denied Alzuain bail.
The remaining charge was adjourned until July.
