Another $5 million will be invested in a major aquatic and leisure centre currently under construction in the Adelaide Hills.
The Federal Government included the funding in Tuesday’s Federal Budget – adding to $10 million announced by then-prime minister Malcolm Turnbull in 2018.
The $25 million project will be based in Mt Barker and also partly funded by Mt Barker Council.
Groundworks have already begun on the project, which will be the biggest aquatic and sports centre in the region.
It is set to include three indoor swimming pools, an indoor stadium, a wellness and lifestyle centre, a cafeteria and retail space.
The new aquatic centre would replace the existing Mountain Pool in Mt Barker, which was built by volunteers in 1955.
Infrastructure Minister Michael McCormack said local, council-led projects such as the aquatic centre needed to be fast-tracked to boost the economy because councils understood what was needed as a local level.
“Our community-led recovery plan empowers local governments nationwide to deliver roads and community infrastructure,” Mr McCormack said.
“This will build shovel-ready local priorities, supporting local jobs and local business.”
