A Mount Barker business owner has pleaded guilty to driving with drugs in his system but says it was a result of peer pressure.
Todd Stuart Jagger-Ogilvie appeared in the Mount Barker Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with one count of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs.
Jagger-Ogilvie, who pleaded guilty to the charge, said the offence committed on October 7 last year in Charleston had been “an honest mistake”.
“I was sort of peer pressured into having a joint and that was on the Friday night,” Jagger-Ogilvie said.
“On the (following) Monday morning I thought I was fine to drive so it was an honest mistake to be honest with you.”
Jagger-Ogilvie, who represented himself, said he ran a pressure cleaning business which had been hit hard by COVID-19.
He asked Magistrate Rodney Oates to consider that fact in his sentencing.
“I am self employed at the moment and since COVID started I lost about 35 per cent of my revenue compared to last year,” Jagger-Ogilvie said.
“So I was hoping to take on a junior with a licence to get around and keep the business going.
“But because of corona I’m in a financial position where I can’t afford to employ anyone.”
He was fined $1100 and issued a 12-month disqualification of his licence, to commence October 1.
Magistrates Oates cautioned Jagger-Ogilvie to take the sentencing seriously, as a breach could lead to jail time.
