Adelaide Hills households will reap the benefits of a $10 million solar farm proposed for Birdwood.
Tetris Energy has lodged a development application with Adelaide Hills Council for the construction of the 4.98 megawatt solar farm, with battery storage, on the corner of Warren and Torrens Valley roads.
If approved, the project will become the first commercial solar initiative in the region and create up to 50 jobs during construction.
The council’s director of strategy and development, Marc Salver, said plans would be considered in October.
The development will cover 15.8ha, with each panel 1.5m by 4.65m and tilted to best capture the sun.
It will hook into SA Power Networks transmission lines on Torrens Valley Road and feed into the grid.
Tetris Energy director Frank Boland said construction of the project would take around four to six months.
He said the Birdwood site was identified following an extensive feasibility study and would mirror a project recently completed in Mannum.
He said locals would benefit from the project through job creations and by being able to access more affordable and sustainable energy through a yet to be announced service provider.
“There are plenty of places in Australia that have fantastic solar resource but there’s no power network to inject the electricity into,” Mr Boland said
“That is why we’ve chosen Birdwood as it has good solar resource and grid connection.
“The Hills has a lot of electricity-intensive agriculture, such as wineries.
“So, because of that, Birdwood is a really good site.”
