A $10 million solar project – the first of its kind in the Adelaide Hills region – has been approved for construction.
Tetris Energy has been given the official go ahead to construct a 4.98 megawatt solar farm on the corner of Warren and Torrens Valley roads in Birdwood.
Plans for the project were approved by the Adelaide Hills Council’s assessment panel on Wednesday evening.
The renewable energy project will be the first commercial solar initiative to the east of the city and is expected to create up to 50 jobs during construction.
The council’s director of strategy and development, Marc Salver, said plans would be considered in October.
The development will cover 15.8ha, with each panel 1.5m by 4.65m and tilted to best capture the sun.
It will hook into SA Power Networks transmission lines on Torrens Valley Road and feed into the grid.
Tetris Energy director Frank Boland said construction of the project would take around four to six months.
He said the Birdwood site was identified following an extensive feasibility study and would mirror a project recently completed in Mannum.
He said locals would benefit from the project through job creations and by being able to access more affordable and sustainable energy through a yet to be announced service provider.
