Lenswood Primary records strong 2019 NAPLAN results

Before the Cudlee Creek fire tore through the Adelaide Hills last year, a small but mighty primary school set the tone for country education.
According to the latest National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) outcomes, Lenswood Primary School recorded the top Year 7 results in the Adelaide Hills region, performing well above the minimum standard.
The school also secured good results in Years 3 and 5.
Principal Jess Moroney credited the results to the school’s small classroom environment.
“I think there are lots of factors, especially in a small school, as to why students do so well,” Mr Moroney said.
“I certainly think that we got a few things right, especially in terms of what we’re doing the whole way through – from prep to Year 7 – to address literacy and numeracy.
“So it’s really please to see when the Year 7s do well as it shows our teachers had a good influence on them throughout their schooling.”
Mr Moroney said the school had also developed a model to assist students with varied learning abilities.
“Over the last few years, we invented this model we call ‘intervention for all’,” he said.
“So we basically add additional support, not only for those students that need extra help, but for those that work at a year level that we think we can extend to their full ability.
“So with that, it was nice to see that our Year 7 students were in the higher band for NAPLAN as it shows that extending and flexing kids at that year level is working.”
NAPLAN is an annual test for students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy, held in May.
It was cancelled this year because of COVID-19.
