Fruit producer Joyson Orchards has been given the green light to construct a new $4m packing facility in Woodside.
The Adelaide Hills Council approved final development plans this month after a public consultation found there was no opposition in the community.
This is despite a significant increase in truck movement along Onkaparinga Valley Road, according to a planning report put before council by project manager Mark Kwiatkowski.
The facility, to be constructed at 202 Onkaparinga Valley Rd, is estimated to process between two to four dispatch semi-trailers per day.
However, delivery to and from the site would require around four to six truck movements per day, and six to 10 trucks per day during peak picking months.
“The majority of the activities associated with the fruit packing facility will be contained within the proposed building with the exception of the movement of vehicles for loading and unloading,” Mr Kwiatkowski said.
Mr Kwiatkowski said the development would also bring new technology to the region to increase production and improve profitability for growers.
This includes storing around 40 to 50 tonnes of produce on the floor each day.
“The application seeks the construction of a fruit packing facility with ancillary offices, parking, retaining walls, boundary fencing and landscaping,” Mr Kwiatkowski said.
“The building will be the home of Adelaide Hills Fresh and will also be the administration head office for the Joyson Group of companies, which includes Joyson Orchards, Balhannah Nurseries, Fleurieu Avocados, Lenswood Estate Wine (and) Jak Joy Livestock.
“While primarily a packing shed for apples, in the future this could change with fruit being processed by the plant.”
