Two Adelaide Hills Councils are seeking government funding for priority projects to kickstart recovery across communities impacted by the Cudlee Creek bushfires and COVID-19.

Twenty-three shovel-ready projects, totalling $98.205 million, have been identified by the Adelaide Hills and Mount Barker Councils.

It follows a call from Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack who requested councils put forward a wishlist of projects to consider for stimulus funding.

Key projects put forward by the Adelaide Hills Council include a $15 million funding request to upgrade the Verdun-Hahndorf interchange, $1 million to rebuild Fox Creek Mountain Bike Park at Cudlee Creek, $9 million to extend the Amy Gillett Bike Path, and $2 million for the creation of an arts and heritage hub in Lobethal.

Meanwhile, a $55 million “mini freeway” linking Mount Barker’s new growth area and upgrades to an industrial precinct in Littlehampton form part of the Mount Barker District Council wishlist.

Adelaide Hills Council Mayor Jan-Claire Wisdom said government investment was crucial to keep people employed during difficult times.

“A focus on tourism infrastructure and community facilities is the key to our recovery and we need Government funding to fast track these projects,” she said.

“We’ve identified priority projects that, with funding commitment from the government, can commence in the short term to stimulate our economy and provide our community with the positive action and support they need to look towards a brighter future.

“In addition to the short-term benefits, these projects will ultimately deliver economic, tourism and community prosperity for the Adelaide Hills region in years to come.”

Official documents show Minister McCormack wrote to local councils earlier this year highlighting the Federal governments interest in fast-tracking infrastructure projects across Australia.

Are Aussies financially prepared for this crisis?

He said an outcome would be delivered in due course after a full list of projects had been received.

“Fast-tracking the delivery of critical road projects across Australia is key to driving jobs,

strengthening the economy and getting people home sooner and safer,” the letter stated.

“Through the Infrastructure Investment Program, the Australian Government assists local

governments to upgrade local roads, bridges and intersections.

“These investments, including through the Roads to Recovery Program, are critical to improving the safety and efficiency of local roads, and contributes to the prosperity and wellbeing of local economies.

“I am seeking your assistance in the identification of any Australian Government land transport infrastructure projects for which construction could commence or be brought forward in the next three to six months. This could include new or existing projects with, or that would qualify for, Australian Government contribution.”
