Wine will be flowing and hands will be sewing at an event designed to bring tourists back to Hahndorf post COVID-19.

Throughout September, businesses will host close to 50 events and experiences in and around Hahndorf’s Main Street and historic village, to help revitalise the town which has experienced a big drop in tourist revenue since the start of the year.

From food masterclasses, wine blending and tasting, family experiences and behind-the-scene tours, HAHNDORF. HANDMADE. HANDCRAFTED. HAND-PICKED will bring together a program of experiences unlike anything before.

Hahndorf Business and Tourism Association spokeswoman Mikyla Gilbert said each event would be small and intimate to allow visitors to experience the town on a more personal level.

“In this time of uncertainty right across the world, one thing we can be certain of is that Hahndorf is still a wonderful place to visit and home to dozens of amazing restaurants, cafes, shops, makers as well as a few pubs,” she said.

“So the traders of Hahndorf are calling on all Adelaideans, Adelaide Hills residents and Hahndorf lovers to support our local village traders.

“The aim of this festival is to come out to support local, family-owned and small businesses and each week we hope all the small events will be booked and sold-out attracting a couple of hundred participants.

“There are also some free and self-guided experiences which will attract more over the weekends.”

HAHNDORF. HANDMADE. HANDCRAFTED. HAND-PICKED launches on September 1 with a number of headline events, including spring wine pairing at Somerled Cellar Bar, gingerbread decorating at Bean and Bikkie and an e-bike tour of the Hahndorf Wine and Produce Loop.

“At a time when you’re not supposed to touch anything, it’s nice to have the opportunity to experience something on a personal level,” Ms Gilbert said.

“So we want people to come here and treat this experience like an overseas and interstate holiday, as traders are really hurting.”

She wanted Adelaide people to “come and rediscover Hahndorf in a way they’ve never done before”.

“Hahndorf generally attract $1 million visitors a year and most of that comes from international students, overseas visitors, interstate and regional SA,” she said.
