Construction has started on a new $2.5m Hills tourism destination catering for beer and cheese lovers.

The Grunthal Brew project on the old Grumpy’s Brewhaus site in Verdun received the go-ahead earlier this week, following a successful bid for a $275,000 state government grant.

The brainchild of Sheree and Saul Sullivan, the entrepreneur couple behind the multi-award-winning Udder Delights Cheese Cellar in Hahndorf, it’s being developed with local developers Marc Cheney and brothers Bill and Rolf Alander.

Mrs Sullivan said the business would help create 12 new full-time positions, spawned across the brewery, bar, restaurant, and cheese cellar when the venue is operational.

She said construction was expected to be completed by the end of the year.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant and, with our venture partners, we aim to create an enticing, fun, accessible and delicious tourism venue at the prominent entrance to the town we love and know so well,” Mrs Sullivan said.

“We look forward to becoming part of an emerging cluster of high-quality venues that showcase some of the Adelaide Hills’ finest produce and strengthen the region’s reputation as a premier hospitality tourism area.”

The business will be headlined by the Grunthal Brewery and Bar but also serve as a new home for the Udder Delights Cheese Cellar, which will relocate from Hahndorf.

Key features include a casual pizza and brewery restaurant, a dedicated conservatory for private functions – a space that will also double for cheesemaking and beer-making classes.

A landscaped backyard overlooking the Onkaparinga River will provide space for children to roam while adults soak up the sun in a relaxed and casual setting.

The venue will be personally managed by Mrs Sullivan who will also continue to host her legendary cheese classes, while husband Saul will oversee the brewery.
