Hahndorf’s German Inn is set for an outdoor expansion.
Formerly known as Cafe Assiette, Mount Barker District Council has granted development approval for alterations and additions to the restaurant’s outdoor dining area.
The redevelopment is worth around $90,000 and includes enclosing the existing outdoor dining deck, additional toilets and solar panels.
It is the first major expansion since 1996 for the state heritage listed building.
Located at 72 Main Street, the inn was built in 1863 to serve as the first commercial bakery in the Adelaide Hills.
According to a report tabled by the council’s assessment panel, the development was approved following community consultation.
One opposing representation was received and predominantly related to a possible encroachment of a one-way street, shared with a neighbouring business.
“The proposal complements the valued heritage elements of the site and streetscape,” the report said.
“Original building elements will not be demolished, the proposal maintains the prominence and integrity of the building.
“The proposal, particularly the dining deck enclosure, is anticipated to reduce interface impacts between abutting sites such as noise and overlooking.
“Overall, the proposed works are consistent with the anticipated forms of development within the zone and warrants planning consent.”
