An aged-care home in Uraidla is set for an $18 million overhaul, which would double its capacity and allow more elderly people to stay living in the Adelaide Hills.

Clayton Church Homes has lodged plans with the Adelaide Hills Council for the redevelopment of Summerhill, a 24-bed aged care home at 1144 Greenhill Road.

The application includes demolishing the home and replacing it with two double-storey buildings, eight water storage tanks and a new carpark.

The project, if approved, would be the most expensive development in the town’s history.

Clayton Church Homes chief executive Nino DiSisto hoped to start construction early next year with a completion date set for early 2022. He said the upgraded care home would employ an extra 40 people and increase the number of beds to 60.

“We’re just waiting on the final council approval, which should be through in the next couple of weeks,” he said.

Mr DiSisto said the Adelaide Hills’ ageing population meant there was a need for more care home beds.

“So now it’s hopefully full steam ahead as there’s a big demand for aged care in the region, and people try to stay within their own communities whenever they can.”

He said people already living at the home would be moved to other Clayton Church Home facilities in Woodside, Prospect and Magill.

He said the project would improve facilities, including larger rooms and ensuites, and allow the home to cater for people with different needs.

“It’s the biggest development this town has ever seen,” Mr DiSisto said.

“The existing facility was an old hospital which was modified over the years so the facility aged care but it still doesn’t suit our needs.

“So this overhaul can’t come soon enough as it’s important project for the Hills community and ongoing employment in the region.”

The Adelaide Hills Council’s director of development and regulatory services Marc Salver said the project’s approval hinged on meeting predetermined bushfire resistance and on-site wastewater disposal requirements.

“However, it is my understanding that they are working hard with consultants to address these concerns over the coming weeks.”

According to 2016 Census data, 17.5 per cent of Adelaide Hills residents are 65 years or older – 4.7 per cent more than in 2011.
