New concept images of a long-planned $2m Mt Barker town square have been unveiled.
Developer Burke Urban Investments has released design images of the “shield-shaped” square, which will be built on an long-underused 1.17ha site along Hutchinson St, in the town’s main district.
The square forms part of the Mt Barker City Centre Project – a multistage development that will eventually include market sheds, a library and civic centre, commercial offices, retail, residential accommodation and a hotel.
Mt Barker Mayor Ann Ferguson said community consultation on the new town square would start on November 8 and run for a month.
“It is an opportunity for our community to help shape the future of this once-in-a-lifetime project, as well as enjoy some family fun, great food and entertainment at our drop-in sessions,” she said.
Burke Urban Investments managing director Kym Burke said the square would become the “crucial public centrepiece” of the wider city centre revamp.
“The ultimate objective is to create an exciting, vibrant, comfortable, and attractive public space interfacing with a market shed and adjacent retail opportunities with a food and beverage and produce focus,” he said.
A town square design report was officially adopted by Mt Barker counsellors last month.
It revealed that acknowledging the Peramangk people would be a key feature of the design.
The lawn space – which will serve as a natural amphitheatre – will be shaped in the form of an indigenous shield.
A mountain gum will also be planted at the apex to serve as “an iconic landmark and meeting place”.
Community consultation will be held at Newenham Estate on November 13, from 10am, and at Carols in the Park, Mt Barker Showgrounds, on December 4, from 5pm.
