Murray Bridge is a step closer to becoming South Australia’s water sport capital, with building of the one-of-a-kind tourism experience to start in coming months.

A vision to create a multimillion-dollar cable watersport park at Murray Bridge is almost ready to take off with building to start in the “coming months”.

Local businessman Adam Bruce on Monday unveiled the fist concept images of the much-anticipated Bridge Watersport Park to be build along the town’s 1879 road bridge.

A first of its kind in the state, the park will offer water skiers and wakeboarders a place they can grab onto a tow cable and skim around a shallow lake, without creating much wake or noise.

The park would also include a second lake with an inflatable water playground, a shop where visitors could buy food or hire equipment, and solar panels to power the cable mechanism’s electric motor.

Up to 20 people would be employed at the tourist attraction during peak periods.

Mr Bruce, a wakeboard instructor and owner of Above Board Shop, said he hoped to start construction in the coming months.

“We’re still going trough the final stages of planning and building approvals but we had some concept images done to give people a bit of an update,” he said.

“I can’t tell people yet when we’re going to open – it’s not something I want to commit to in this current climate but it will be built out this year.”

The watersport park received official planning approval in 2021 after being initially knocked back by the Murray Bridge Council’s development panel in 2020.

The company appealed the original decision in the Environment, Resources and Development Court, which subsequently granted planning consent.

Murray Bridge Mayor Brenton Lewis said the project would mean “a hell of a lot for tourism” in his town.

“There is enormous support around the project in general, however local wakeboarders are probably the most excited to finally have a cable park in their home state,” he said.

“It will open up the opportunity for anyone to try wakeboarding/waterskiing and kneeboarding.

“Tow sports have a huge following here already and are only hindered by lack of opportunity and cost (and) Bridge Watersport Park will eliminate both of these barriers.”
