A victim had powerful words for the man who manipulated and degraded her, saying she hopes his punishment “ruins him in every way”.
Brett Robert Reynolds, 40, preyed on the young girl and plied her with drugs before sexually abusing her multiple times.
The Adelaide District Court heard the victim, who was aged 15, was on the website Omegle with her friend in March 2019 when they came across Reynolds’ profile.
Reynolds told the girls he was 24, despite being 36.
The court heard the victim and her two friends stayed overnight at Reynolds’ house in April 2019 and smoked marijuana with him.
The victim, who told Reynolds she was 16, continued to visit him at his house on multiple occasions, where he sexually abused her.
The court heard the victim spent the night at Reynolds’ home in May 2019 and smoked crack cocaine with him before they had sex.
On another occasion, Reynolds and the victim smoked marijuana and cocaine and he filmed her performing a sex act on him.
The victim told her friend she was sleeping with Reynolds and the friend reported it to the school counsellor.
Reynolds, of Mount Barker, pleaded guilty to one count of maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with a child.
The court heard the victim felt degraded, manipulated and violated by the offending.
“She describes herself as having lost her virginity to a child predator,” Judge Joana Fuller said during sentencing.
“The victim said she sent many nude pictures of herself to you during the course of your relationship.
“She said she developed a dependency on drugs but she has thankfully overcome that.”
The court heard the victim had these words for Reynolds: “The punishment you receive will not be a fraction of the hardship and pain you have caused me. I can only hope it ruins you in every way”.
The court heard Reynolds turned to drugs after the breakdown of his relationship and acted impulsively with the victim.
Judge Fuller said Reynolds should have resisted temptation after finding out she was 16.
“You hid it from your friends and family and you knew the victim was still in school,” she said.
“Disturbingly, the victim repeatedly referred to you as ‘daddy’ in her text messages to you and you did nothing to discourage this.”
The court heard Reynolds was genuinely remorseful for the offending and had been working at the Lobethal Abattoir while on home detention bail.
Judge Fuller sentenced Reynolds to four years and six months, with a non-parole period of two years and two months.
