Adelaide motoring enthusiasts can see world’s fastest road car – the Bugatti Veyron

One of the world’s most expensive and fastest hypercars will take to the streets of Adelaide in a rare sighting.

The French are known for their social flamboyance and haute couture flair, but this one almost never gets out for any occasion.

Adelaide car enthusiasts will witness a rare treat on Tuesday when the National Motor Museum’s display car, the 2008 Bugatti Veyron, hits the streets for a spin.

A special permit has been granted to drive the car, which is worth up to $3m, from Hindmarsh where it has been serviced back to its home at the Museum in Birdwood.

The Bugatti Veyron was one of only 71 made in that year, 450 in total to 2015, and was the fastest road going car in the world in 2008.

The owner remains anonymous, but lucky mechanic Mario Labrosciano of Veloce Motorsport, said the drive into the hills would be a low-speed one for a car that under racetrack conditions can reach 100km/h in 2.46 seconds with a top speed of 408km/h.

The Veyron’s huge 8-litre engine can produce a staggering 987bhp/736Kw, similar to a 2021 Formula 1 car.

“The Bugatti Veyron is an extraordinary feat of automotive engineering, complete with seven gears and special run-flat tyres that cost up to $20,000 each, it is designed specifically to handle top speeds,’’ he said.

“It has a special spoiler that deploys to lower the vehicle when it hits 220km/h and at full speed, it consumes 78L of fuel per 100kms travelled, compared to 10L for the average family car.

Mario will make one special stop, at Coopers Stadium where Adelaide United Captain Stefan Mauk will be taken for a drive.
