A snake has been spotted at a popular riverfront reserve in the centre of Murray Bridge, sparking new warnings as summer weather rears its head.

Residents took to social media to remind people to be vigilant as the temperature is set to hit 30 degrees this week and snake activity increases.

Earlier this year, Murray Bridge’s flooded waterways were swarming with displaced snakes, with one homeowner discovering 10 at his river property in two hours, with another spotting five more in just one.

In March, a Murraylands father detailed his nightmare encounter with an eastern brown snake after noticing was looking to strike his two-year-old daughter.

Murraylands snake catcher David Dique told The Messenger it was best for residents who encounter snakes to respect the reptile’s space and wait for them to move on.

“Most of the time people don’t see them because they are shy creatures,” he said.

“For the most part, give them some respect, give them space and they will take off.”

Mr Dique – who is the only licensed snake catcher along the Murray – said if residents were concerned about snakes in their homes or posing immediate danger, to call a professional and not attempt to harm the animals.

“My advice to any one is to call a licensed snake catcher and get them to remove them safely and relocate them – they are protected species,” he said.

“For killing a snake, it’s a $10,000 fine and or a prison sentence.”
