A major Adelaide supermarket has pulled out of plans to expand to an Adelaide Hills town – but a new retail hub proposal offers a big clue about a replacement.

A supermarket has pulled its plans to set up in an Adelaide Hills town – but concept images for a new retail and health hub reveal a huge clue about a replacement.

Design company Kevjon has lodged plans for a development on the corner of Battunga Rd and Mawson Rd at Meadows, about 45km southeast of Adelaide.

It would feature a shop, supermarket, pharmacy and medical centre with three consulting rooms and a large car park.

Romeo’s Foodland previously announced a store for Meadows, but owner Joseph Romeo has confirmed those plans are now cancelled.

Locals were eager for the Foodland to open in their town, which has no supermarket.

However, concept images for the new proposal reveal Drakes signage and logos on the supermarket. Drakes did not respond to requests for comment.

A ‘Meadows Foodland’ Facebook page said in May 2024 its new building in the town was under construction, sharing a photo a large sign reading: “Romeo’s Foodland is coming to Meadows”.

However, Mr Romeo on Wednesday told The Advertiser the store would not open.

“There was talks of Romeo’s going, but wasn’t confirmed,” he said.

The proposed new development – now open to public consultation – boasts a 486 sqm shop near a 974 sqm supermarket, both accessible from the carparking area.

A reception/counter area, store room, staffroom and toilet facilities will be featured inside the 235 sqm pharmacy on the northern side of the site.

Developers also want to renovate and expand an existing 92.7 sqm building to create the proposed medical centre with consultation rooms.

The three consulting rooms would have a treatment room, store room, reception area, administration area, staffroom and toilets.

Locals will have access to 91 on-site parking spaces.

Two significant trees and four regulated trees will be removed, and replaced with picturesque landscaping around the premises.

The Facebook page for Meadows Foodland, which has more than 500 followers, had not been deleted on Thursday morning and has not been updated since May 2024.

In February last year, the page posted: “Sorry for the delay with updating the community on your new supermarket. It is fair to say we have had some setbacks with the development of your Foodland supermarket.”

Excited locals commented that the news was “wonderful” and “this is amazing”.
