A local footy club has raised concerns over the council’s plans to develop a caravan park on their grounds.

Under a proposal by Mount Barker Council, a $10 per night RV park would be established at 2-6 Davies St, Macclesfield.

The existing land at the site would remain and continue to function as a recreation ground that currently houses the Macclesfield Football Club.

While the council said consultation had already begun with the Macclesfield Recreation Grounds Committee, a spokesperson for the football club said they had all but been left in the dark over the project.

“There has been no consultation from council to the football cub that we know of,” they said.

“It doesn’t pose an issue as people already camp there, but it may concern us a little on game day or if we have finals.

“We haven’t really discussed it as it is being handled by Macclesfield Rec Grounds.”

The proposed RV park would operate with a number of conditions, including up to 48-hour parking for self-contained motorhomes only, no tent camping, no fires permitted, no toilet or shower facilities provided and no booking facilities available.

Sites would not be allocated, instead operating on a “first come, first accommodated” basis with an honesty box system, according to a council report.

It would be managed jointly by the Macclesfield Recreation Ground and Mount Barker Council.

“The use of honesty boxes for these types of land uses is not uncommon,” a council spokesperson said.

“RV Parks in Balhannah and Langhorne Creek use honesty boxes.

“This proposed RV Park is relatively small being able to accommodate only 10 RV’s at any one time. Given the overall site, access arrangements and the very nature of this type of passive tourist accommodation, no traffic congestion of any manner is anticipated.

“Should the proposal be approved, the limited construction needed to establish the RV Park can be undertaken in the coming months.”

Consultation is open until May 7.
