Witnesses told The Advertiser the man was struck by a Ford Ranger as the driver was exiting an Ampol service station on the street.

Nearby resident Mick – who did not wish to share his last name – said people usually took a shortcut across First Ave. He said he heard a loud bang before rushing to help the injured man.

“The driver was out of his car going up to the servo yelling ‘ambulance’ so I ran over and rang the ambulance,” he said.

“I had the emergency people on the phone and they were giving me directions on CPR.”

Mick said he and the driver of the Ford Ranger provided first aid before paramedics took over.

He said the pedestrian had a laceration to the front and back of his head.

“I’m feeling a bit shaken up, I’m going to go clear my head,” he said.

Adrian Leo, 41, a resident in a block of flats on First Ave, said he didn’t witness the incident but regularly sees the man who was hit.

“He always walks past me down this street and past me and Arndale and I say hello to him,” he said.

“He comes in and out of there (nearby apartments).

“I can’t really express it, I just feel really sad for him and his family.”

Police have closed all traffic on First Ave between Hanson Rd and Gray St, and are urging drivers to avoid the area.

A special operations MedSTAR team was also called and the man was taken to hospital by ambulance. Major Crash officers attended the scene and will investigate the cause of the crash.

The driver of the Ford Ranger is assisting police.
