THE former Magill Youth Training Centre in Woodforde is set to be demolished next month.

Renewal SA chief executive Fred Hansen said a contractor would "shortly" be appointed to raze the former training centre buildings in December.

Nearby residents would be informed of the details of the demolition via a letterbox drop when a decision on the contractor was made, Mr Hansen said.

"While some of the buildings were constructed from the 1970s and contain asbestos, residents can be reassured that this will be carefully removed by an appropriately licensed specialist," Mr Hansen said.

The State Government put the 19ha site, which is earmarked for a 250-home development, on the market last month.

Mr Hansen said several developers had shown interest in the site.

"There has been strong interest from local and national developers, consistent with the unique nature of the site and it being one of the last remaining significant tracts of land to be developed in Adelaide's prime eastern suburbs," he said.

He said a decision on the developer was expected to be made "in the first half of 2014" and housing lots were expected to be sold from late 2014.

The site sits on the western boundary of the Adelaide Hills Council area and shares a border with Campbelltown Council.

Plans for the Glen Stuart Rd site include shops, office buildings and a childcare centre.

Planning changes to allow the housing development to go ahead still still need to be signed off by Planning Minister John Rau.
