Hello and welcome to our editorial series Bedtime Beauty Stories.
It’s a space for talented individuals and big names in beauty to share how they get ready for slumber, including ways to wind down, night-time beauty rituals and go-to remedies for falling asleep.
We were first introduced to Zoe Marshall as a social media influencer, but then got to know her better via her podcast, The Deep. She’s one of those women who feels like a BFF, even if you’ve never met her.
Marshall, who is married to ex-NRL player Benji Marshall, is a mum of two little ones, Ever and Fox, so it’s safe to say that sleep is high on her priority list, which is why she has her evening routine down-pat.
From scrolling through TikTok to breathing exercises and her go-to PM beauty products, Marshall walks us through her bedtime beauty rituals from start to finish.
Over to you, Zoe!
What’s the first thing you do to wind down before bed?
Okay so I’m going to be honest. When I get into bed I check my emails, I check my Instagram and I check TikTok. I do one last sweep of my phone before I put it down for the night.
Actually, that’s a lie. I check on my baby via the monitor and I’m quite paranoid so I always make sure I can rewind the monitor back and see her moving in the last few minutes.
And the last thing you do before you go to sleep?
I spritz my pillow with a calming mist. I make sure my eye mask and ear plugs are next to my bed and then I start my book. It’s the best way to wind down. At the moment, I’m reading My Policeman by Bethan Roberts. Then if I have trouble sleeping, I take some homoeopathic sleep drops and then do my breathing exercises. Trust me, this always gets me to sleep.
And let’s not forget the goddamn last pee of the day – I always must pee before I go to sleep (I hate being woken by a pee).
Talk us through your night time beauty routine …
I always remove my makeup. My mum taught me from a very young age to remove all my makeup before bed. No matter how tired I was, or if I’ve been out clubbing, I had to take all my makeup off.
Then I use Bio-Oil Skincare Oil Natural as a full body nourishing treatment before bed. The texture of all the plant oils and vitamin rich ingredients is heaven and absorbs evenly into my skin. But that said, really I use it to try and improve the appearance of my stretch marks from my two pregnancies. I know they will always be there and that’s okay but overtime, this oil really does improve the appearance of those unwanted marks – all whilst I’m sleeping!
To finish, I use a face serum moisturiser by SkinCeuticals and lather this all the way down my neck to the boobies.
Do you take any supplements or sleep-aids?
I also take my supplements at night which includes a probiotic, iron, vitamin C and a little concoction from my [Sydney-based] naturopath, David Jivan.
What do you sleep on?
I sleep in a king bed and away from my husband. Bless him. We have separate rooms. We’ve been sleeping separately for about 10 years. It’s actually heaven. I read once in a book by [Indian meditation teacher] Osho that it’s madness to share a bed with someone. People who are sleeping and are unconscious don’t know how disruptive their spouses’ noises and moving has on their sleep. It’s not doing you any favours, and it can build a lot of resentment. So, we sleep separately, and I love it! Expensive on holidays though.
What’s your stance on technology before bed?
Totally against it but I do it. You’ve just reminded me to stop.
Do you have a preferred or go-to late night snack?
Always Loco Love Chocolate or Avalanche Hot Chocolate. Also Cheezels – don’t tell my naturopath!
What time do you usually hop into bed?
9.30pm to 10pm.
