'You should patent that!' Clever reason people are using fly nets on their bins

This trend is starting to catch on in the Eastern Suburbs of NSW - and it's classically Aussie!

Why are chips being installed under my Bins?

Aussies are rather passionate when it comes to the weekly collection of their council bins, and every now and then we stumble on a bin hack that leaves us feeling torn.

Some are genius ideas that solve common problems, while others are inching their way into "wow, you're bothered!" territory.

Now, a new hack has people torn once again. This time, involving a rather 'unique' way of fending off bugs that hover around the waste and create all sorts of issues.

How to stop pesky bugs getting into your bin

A photo was recently shared in a Maroubra Community Facebook group showing how one clever resident was tackling the common issue of maggots breeding in council bins.

"Johnny from The Bay Bakehouse in McKeon St has come up with the best idea to repel maggots and flies," the post celebrates.

"A roll of fly screen from Bunnings with some weights on the end. Apparently it works!"

The post had many people applauding the local baker and joking about how Bunnings just increased the sales of their fly screen nets with just one social media mention.

"Good thinking 99," someone commented.

"You should patent that!" another declared.

Another echoed: "It does seem a good idea."

A clever Aussie hack?

While some people from nearby suburbs in NSW said the same thing has been happening in their hood too, another Aussie resident said there was actually an easier solution that will not cost you a cent.

"Bins need to be washed out regularly especially throughout summer," they insisted.

Others also claimed the 'clever' Aussie hack seemed a little problematic, with one suggesting:  "Maybe attach a big rubber band to the mesh & just slip it over?" and another questioning: "It would seem like they could just fly or crawl under it?"

Pesky bin chickens kept out

In January this year, Aussies applauded the idea of securing one-litre bottles to council bin lids to stop another common problem - having bin chickens (aka Ibis birds) rummage through your scraps.

One of the most common complaints by Aussie locals was the iconic bird's ability to open our bin lids and create a big mess before the garbo even arrives to collect it.

The video shared on TikTok had many locals relating, though once again divided on whether or not they could be bothered going to such lengths to protect ... well... rubbish.
