'Hamstering' is the steamy new sex position no one should try

A trend that's anything but caged

In this latest trend, TikTok users are stepping off the hamster wheel and onto the car roof. But is it for real? Or just for kicks and clicks?

Ever thought you'd see the day when “just” a car date wouldn't cut it anymore? Welcome to the world of 'Hamstering', the TikTok trend that's forever changing the way we think about hamsters (and perhaps humanity).

Hamstering or the "thirsty hamster" is when one penis-owning partner lies face down atop a car with a sunroof while the other engages them in oral pleasure through the open hatch— not following? A hamster lapping up water from its bottle, but make it X-rated.

It's as wild as it sounds, and it's got TikTok in a frenzy. But this sex position trend didn’t start there.

Chatter about "the thirsty hamster sunroof thing" kicked off on X, formerly known as Twitter, in February 2024. Several users tweeted about the act, with one complaining, "When he won't lay over my sunroof and let me act like a thirsty hamster 😔💔" and before we knew it, Tiktok was all over it.

Now the platform is filled with clips of people pondering the mechanics of how it works (trust us, we’re not sure either), sharing how-tos (especially when it comes to dropping hints), or pre-act clips making sure the coast is clear before its go-time. But is this just the internet of it all, or are people giving this a go?

Surprisingly (or not?), the mood around "Hamstering" is somewhat optimistic. Some people are genuinely testing the waters (or should we say the sunroof) out of curiosity and a bit of adventure.

But let's get real: Hamstering isn't just a straightforward hop on the car and it’s go-time. It's a balancing act, quite literally.

Size, strength, and stamina all play a part. And let's not forget the giver. They might find themselves in a bit of a pretzel, needing a few yoga classes to master the necessary acrobatics to last the required time until orgasm. And after that, maybe a neck brace.

But when it comes to intimacy, it’s not always about the destination – it's about the journey. For some, dabbling in Hamstering is less about climax and more for the fun, thrill and playful exploration. After all, it's not always about the climax but the journey – this one being quite the acrobatic feat, for both the giver and receiver.

If you're tempted to give it a whirl, remember that safety comes first and pleasure second. Ensure that the car is firmly in park (the car rolling into a river is no one's idea of fun),  and out of the way of prying eyes.

Many people will find it a turn-on knowing that someone could walk by at any minute – and we get it, this position is made for the exhibitionists among us. But just remember, while car sex isn't explicitly illegal in New South Wales, and there is no specific crime of sexual intercourse or nudity in public, there is for indecent exposure. And Hamstering is primed for the punishing when it comes to that charge.

If you and your partner are planning on taking a joy ride any time soon, then good luck, and may we suggest you keep a sense of humour handy? You might need it.
