‘We get together every three months and batch cook’

But the mums don’t just make a couple of pots of Bolognese, they cook over 150 meals to stock their freezers for months.

When it comes to cooking, Sharla and Christie feel our pain.

“I used to be like you. You cook every single day,” Sharla says in a YouTube video.

"But not only do you cook every day, you’re the one that has to decide what you’re going to be cooking and you need to run to the store several times a week to get the ingredients.

“And then once you’ve done all that work, you’ve actually got to cook it. And when you’re done, you’re probably the one who has to do all the clean up and dishes.”

Sound familiar?

Inspired by this very uninspiring situation, Sharla and Christie decided to make a change, and started batch-cooking freezer meals.

But this is not about cooking a double recipe of spaghetti Bolognese on a Tuesday, freezing half and patting yourself on the back.

Sharla and Christie get together every few months, do a massive meal plan and shop, and then spend the day cooking. Their methods are so successful, they have a popular YouTube channel, a website and a cooking club.

In a viral video called “153 Freezer Meals Mega Marathon Prep” the pair cooked, you guessed it, 153 freezer meals together over the course of a couple of days.

Neighbours batch cook over 150 freezer meals

“We don’t live like that anymore,” Sharla said.

“We are neighbours and besties, and we’ve been getting together every three months for the last 11 years to cook massive amounts of freezer meals,” Christie said.

“We only cook dinner once every three months,” Sharla added.

Makes us wish Sharla and Christie were our neighbours.

Making 153 freezer meals is no walk in the park. There are techniques for browning multiple kilos of beef mince or sausage, cooking large amounts of bacon and chicken, not to mention planning grocery lists and meals.

The recipes in the video are varied.

One moment they’re putting together ingredients for chicken satay to be served with rice in lettuce leaves, the next they’re making country sausage and hashbrown casserole.

They way they store the food is clever. Meals are portioned in Ziplock bags and squeezed carefully to remove as much air as possible because “oxygen is what makes frozen food get freezer burn”.

They also have pre-printed labels with the meal name plus serving instructions, so anyone in the family could prepare the meal.

Freezer meals go viral

Followers loved the video.

“You’re teaching this generation to cook smarter, not harder,” one person said.

“Freezer meals definitely changed my life and I’m now making a bunch for a family member who’s about to have her first baby,” said another.
