Rex Airlines announces new competitive flight direct route from Adelaide to Brisbane

Rex Airlines has unveiled a new direct flight from Adelaide, planning a cut-price deal when it’s introduced in late October.

‘Why are we protecting Qantas?’: Flying kangaroo not a ‘national’ airline

Rex Airlines has announced a new flight route from Adelaide, flying direct to Brisbane – at just half the cost of its competitors.

The new route will start on October 30, initially offering a limited-time promotional price starting from just $149 one way.

Chief executive of the Brisbane Airport Corporation, Gert-Jan de Graaff, said the route would fill a hole in the market left lacking after the pandemic.

The airline is offering a checked baggage limit of 23kg and refreshments with all flights, and those looking to upgrade can fly business class for less than $400.

This route is the third announced in the past three months, with Rex flights now connecting Adelaide-Sydney and Melbourne-Hobart.

It comes after Adelaide Airport general manager Brenton Cox outlined a grand plan for travellers to fly direct to 37 countries from the SA airport in February.

Mr Cox stated that more direct flights were needed to ensure tourism continued to grow in the state.

The South Australian tourism industry hit a record $8.1bn in the year to December 2019. Then Covid hit and it slumped to $4.4bn in the year to March 2021.

It is now back to $7.3bn for the year to September 2022 and Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison says the state is back on track to its goal of $12.8bn by 2030.
