A hungry traveller returning from Bali has paid for what is probably the most expensive Maccas run they will ever have.
A passenger arriving at Darwin Airport last week was sprung with a variety of undeclared items that could be carrying foot and mouth disease.
The passenger was found bringing in two sausage and egg McMuffins from a Bali McDonald’s, and a ham croissant. The seized items are being tested for foot and mouth disease before they are “destroyed”.
The passenger was fined $2664 for carrying the worrying biosecurity breach. In Bali, a sausage and egg McMuffin goes for 26,000 rupiah each – or $A2.50.
Hot cakes, selling for 23,000 rupiah ($A2.22) can also be seen in a photo of the contraband released by Mr Watt’s office. It is unclear how much the passenger paid for the ham croissant, which could not be found on McDonald’s Bali menu.
Agriculture Minister Murray Watt said the fine was twice the cost of an airfare to Bali.
“I have no sympathy for people who choose to disobey Australia’s strict biosecurity measures,” he said.
