When just about everything goes wrong

NSW Police have just shared an interaction with a young driver which will certainly stick with him for a long time.

“About 2:50pm Friday the 22nd police attached to Goulburn Highway Patrol were travelling West on the Hume Highway at Breadalbane, which is a signposted 110kmh zone,” Traffic and Highway Patrol Command shared in a statement.

“Police came up behind a silver Subaru Forrester that was displaying red P plates, travelling in lane 2 of 2 at a speed of 90kmh.

“Police maintained a position behind the vehicle for some distance observing the vehicle was not overtaking, turning right, or avoiding any obstructions on the roadway, despite passing several ‘Keep left unless overtaking’ signs.”

Unfortunately, this was just the beginning of what would become a host of fineable offences.

Once police caused the vehicle to stop, the male driver actually produced a Class C Learner licence - rather than the P1 licence the red P plates should indicate.

The driver was also not accompanied by a fully licenced supervisor. However, at the time, there was a female passenger in the rear of the vehicle tending to a small child who was the holder of a P1 licence, who police deemed could and should have been driving the vehicle instead.

The damage was done

The police shared that the male driver was issued infringements for ‘Not display L plates’, ‘Drive in right lane where speed limit over 80kmh’ and for ‘Learner not accompanied by licensed driver’.

The male driver’s licence was further suspended for a period of 3 months.

Together, the three infringements amounted to a total fine of $1775, with four demerit points lost.

Learn from this!

Commenters on a post on Facebook were quick to applaud the police officers for enforcing laws against driving in the right lane - something which many believe goes unnoticed, and was the reason this driver was pulled over in the first place.

“Horray!! Great to see someone finally fined for travelling in the overtaking lane👏👏👏,” one commenter said.

“Driving in [the] right hand lane when not overtaking needs to [be] heavily policed on all vehicles,” another agreed.

“A pair of brain surgeons right there. Haha. Hooray, though, someone getting a ticket for hogging right lane, I thought that was an urban myth! 😁 thanks HWP!” a third agreed.

This infringement alone set the man back $410 and two demerit points.

So, next time you’re on the highway, maybe think twice before doing the same.
