Only the experts can tell them apart.
Ever since Johann Adam Birkenstock cranked out his first pair of eponymous sandals back in 1774, they have become a byword for ultra comfortable and hardwearing holiday gear.
And as frequently travellers, let us tell you, they are the bomb in that they go with any outfit. But, for the most part, they hover around the $200 mark and with cosilivi, that’s a big number.
Enter Cotton On. Its Double Buckle Sandal costs $29.99, comes in Dark Chocolate, Brown and Black and features an outsole made from 100 per cent recycled materials.
Fancy something more substantial? The Closed Toe Buckle slides, $39.99, come in six colours: olive, taupe, tobacco and black with the optional extra of a fluffy lining.
I took these - sans fluff - on a recent trip to Vietnam and they were ideal. Even on the back of a moped and worn with socks like the cool kids do.
Kmart, meanwhile, are offering Double Band Slides - made with a synthetic upper, lining and outsole, for $10. Fancy the all-rubber version? They’re $6
If you’re looking for something that sits between the Kmart/Cotton On price point and the actual Birkenstocks, Amazon offers a women’s cork footbed slide sandal with arch support by Odoly for $54.
