'That’s not a bakery!' Woman shocks passengers on flight with bizarre act

“If I was sat next to you, I would ask for a new seat immediately and a full refund."

Plane etiquette tips all frequent flyers need to know

Look, I love bread. I love buying fresh bread, baking bread, eating bread (preferably warm and smothered in butter). But never in my life did I ever think I'd see "Mile High Sourdough Club" appear in my Instagram algorithm.

But here we are.

A baking influencer has gone viral for doing the unthinkable on a flight and it's popping up in many social media feeds RN. Why? Because she decided to do some baking to kill time on the long-haul flight.

I mean, great idea really. There's a lot of time to kill after all. But oh so problematic!

Maria Baradell, who goes by @leafandloafco on Instagram, recently shared a video of her preparing a loaf of sourdough while en route to Spain.

Yes, en route. As in... WHILE ON THE PLANE.

The footage shows the passenger and baking enthusiast grabbing all of her perfectly packed ingredients, including her sourdough starter, flour, water, and salt before mixing them up in a collapsible bowl resting on the tray table ahead of her seat.

“I want to surprise my sister with a fresh loaf of bread,” she captioned the video before asking her 34K followers: “Do you want to see the final results?”

Sadly for her, many did not.

Other passengers were mortified

While proud of her efforts, the woman was labelled as "inconsiderate" and "gross" for whipping up her precious dough on the flight.

"This is ridiculous!" one person slammed.

Another agreed: “That’s an airplane - not a bakery. Learn some manners, people.. please.”

“Imagine you settle into your seat and the person next to [you] sets up a camera and starts taking out bowls, ingredients, and making bread,” another mocked.

Others were grossed out by the thought of her preparing food on the tray where some passengers opt to change their babies' nappies to save them from visiting the toilets.

“Enjoy your germ-bread,” one person criticised.

A little strange, sure. But I'm not sure how baking bread on that table would be any different from eating food off it like you would with any meal served on a flight...?

Gross stuff aside, many followers wanted to point out that what the woman was doing was actually very dangerous to people around her on the same flight.

It's actually dangerous

People who knew enough about allergies and intolerances pointed out that anyone with a food allergy could potentially become very ill if they were seated next to her.

“This is inconsiderate for all the people on the plane allergic to wheat and/or gluten,” one person chimed in.

"Looks really cute but please don’t do it in planes, it’s a really closed place and a celiac could suffer an intoxication, the flour can easily ‘fly’ and spread," another shared.

Another person said you do you, but they would personally ask to be moved.

"If I was sat next to you, I would ask for a new seat immediately and a full refund because it would make me sick for several weeks to just inhale the flour. Please be more considerate next time," they requested.

Only good intentions here, folks

Given the amount of attention, Maria took to her page to thank those who appreciated the quirky video and requested more kindness from her followers.

“I was trying to be creative after I saw another creator making pasta in-flight, but thanks to your comments I learned this was not a great idea,” she wrote.

“I am very thankful for the people who shared their feedback in a kind way, but it’s ok if you want to hate on it, I had good intentions.”

She also clarified that #milehighsourdoughclub "won’t be a thing" so I can rest easy knowing this won't trigger a new trend in my algorithm. I'd be lying if I said wasn't a little sad about that.
