Whether or not you believe in psychic abilities, a lot of people do – South Australians included. For decades combined, the 10 women on this list have been using their gifts to “service and help people,” as is how psychic Deb Pelham describes the reason for her work.
From tuning into the energy of criminals to work out what happened, to uncovering affairs; and from helping people deal with grief, to predicting the future with information learned from spirits, these 10 psychics are the most in demand in the state.
Deb Pelham
Unley
Deb Pelham discovered her gift in her late 30s and hasn’t looked back.
As a child, Deb Pelham said she always knew something was different about herself.
She said she remembers thinking that if she told anyone, they would think she was crazy and try to lock her up in a mental institution.
“I kept it all to myself and battled with OCD, anxiety and depression for most of my childhood, teenage and adult years, thinking there was something really wrong with me,” she said.
It wasn’t until her late thirties that she would realise she had a gift. At age 31 she had a Tarot reading by a psychic who told her she should be on the other side of the table.
“I said ‘why?’, her response was that I was highly intuitive and should be doing readings myself and to be proud I was still here,” she said.
This led to Ms Pelham finding her craft; she said for most of her adult life she had a strong sense there had to be something “more” to having a mainstream life.
At age 36, she had been running her own successful wedding stationary business for 12 years. After discovering her gift, she started working full time as a psychic medium and opened a space on Unley Road to see clients needing readings, healing and guidance.
“When I fully realised being psychic was my ‘something different’, the search to belong was over, I finally felt at home within myself and had a sense of peace and belonging,” she said.
Ms Pelham said every day in her job is different. She has been asked by her clients to tune into the energy of criminals, paedophiles, murderers and the dead to work out what has happened.
“When I tune into someone who is a criminal I will get references to bikie gangs and drugs and violence and my own symbolic reference for criminal activity or I’ll get references to TV shows and movies,” she said.
She has also worked with people suspecting their partner has cheated on them, navigating divorce, and providing guidance on whether a partner is suited.
“Every day is different, every reading is very different and my purpose as I see it is to be the sounding board, the confidant, the one person that my clients can confide in,” she said.
Ms Pelham has clients across the country and internationally.
Maria Jones
Aldgate
For 25 years, Maria Jones has been working as a intuitive medium. Based in Aldgate, she said her life’s purpose is to help people through her craft.
“I’ve been asked a lot over the years why I do what I do. It’s very simple, I love being of service and helping people,” she said.
Ms Jones said she started doing readings at age 12 after her art teacher at school taught her how to read palms.
“I didn’t think anything of it when I was connecting with the other side. To be honest, I thought everyone could do it just like I could. I was shocked to learn that people sitting in front of me chose not to listen to their intuition,” she said.
Ms Jones said she loves people and people are a huge reason why she loves what she does.
Ms Jones has a policy for her clients — she will only see someone once in 12 months, and only after 12 months are they welcomed back.
Suzie Gibbs
Richmond
Soul Connections with Suzie is run by Suzie Gibbs, who found her psychic abilities when she was first married over thirty years ago.
Ms Gibbs, 66, said she would get supper ready and tell her husband to get wine as she knew they were having visitors.
“We didn’t have a phone so friends and family would just pop in, and they did, they were absolutely amazed that we were expecting them,” Ms Gibbs said.
At 29 Ms Gibbs learned meditation which took her intuition to a higher level. She started doing tea-leaf readings for her friends and others.
“My life’s journey has given me this wonderful gift that I know helps my clients through some very difficult times in their lives. Whether it be helping with grief, depression, abuse, love or just simply validating their thoughts,” she said.
Kaysey Mackenzie
Andrews Farm
Kaysey Mackenzie said she was born a psychic medium and has been having psychic experiences since she was five years old.
It wasn’t until she was 25 that she started to acknowledge and realise the full extent of her abilities and what she could do with them.
“I always loved helping people and bringing them comfort; I was always the person people would turn to for advice so I knew that by having these abilities I could help people in a unique and special way,” she said.
Ms Mackenzie, now 30, works from her home in Andrews Farm but her work is mainly done online. She runs a few women's circles and groups as well as Reiki (Japanese form of energy healing), inner child healing, psychic readings and psychic development.
“I love everything about being a psychic, it gives me so much happiness knowing I can be in a safe space for people and help them,” she said.
Psychic Medium Tee
Port Adelaide
Tee remembers speaking to a spirit as a toddler in her cot. Her uncle who had been living in the UK and recently passed came to visit her as a spirit.
“I could see, hear and communicate with spirits, spirit animals, and angels just like they were part of the physical world. As a young child, I had play dates with my imaginary friends and animals, being petrified of the ‘demons’ was a regular occurrence for me,” she said.
Tee, 41, said she gave her first reading at 16 and had her father’s guidance to nurture her gift.
“I come from a long ancestral line of intuitives, so my family nurtured my gifts like it was the ‘normal’ normal for me,” she said.
Tee is based in Port Adelaide and holds face-to-face appointments in the western suburbs, and helps people around the state with phone and video call readings.
Sharna D’Fern
Adelaide
As a third generation spirit medium, Sharna D’Fern said her spiritual abilities have always been present in her life.
“My passion is connecting the physical life to the spiritual life, and yes, there is a life between our lives,” she said.
Ms D’Fern is a renown celebrity evidential medium and has been awarded the SA Inaugral Psychic of the Year, People’s Choice Psychic and has been inducted into the Psychic Hall of Fame.
“People seek me out because I channel messages without using psychic divination aids, for my honesty, accuracy, and for my down-to-earth messages,” she said.
Tracey Frederick
Salisbury North
After a near-death experience at age four at a neighbour’s swimming pool, Tracey Frederick began seeing and communicating with past loved ones.
She now gives readings across Australia and all over the world.
Ms Frederick, 46, runs The Oracle Room, providing Tarot and Oracle Card readings online, over the phone or face-to-face in Salisbury North. Ms Frederick also performs Reiki and energy healings, guided meditation classes and general spiritual guidance through her workshops.
“I absolutely love being able to help people connect with their passed loved ones, offer guidance on any aspect of their life journey and giving validation to people’s own intuition,” she said.
Ms Frederick said she has had many sightings of Elizabeth Woolcock, the only woman hanged in SA, on ghost tours at the Adelaide Gaol.
“Elizabeth is always pacing up and down the length of the courtyard outside her cell and has many times shown me a visual of her hanging and even allows me to feel the pain she felt,” she said.
Jane C Phillips
Plympton
As a child, Jane Phillips said she had imaginary friends and was lonely. She’s always been into myths, legends and the unexplained. At 14, she became interested in other faiths and the occult, and this is where her journey begins.
“I jumped wholeheartedly into investigating spiritual study and exploring my own psychic and spiritual development. This became a cornerstone of my studies at university and has continued to be a governing factor in my life as I have gotten older,” she said.
Now, at 56, she helps with readings, tarot, mediumship, and helping others find closure.
“I’m an ear when needed, an open door when all avenues have been exhausted. I help by being there and doing all I can,” she said.
Ms Phillips said over the last 40 years she has helped police, crown prosecutors and private investigators in pursuit of criminals.
“I consulted with a senior police officer in regard to a man who was fatally stabbed after answering his door to a stranger. After using my help, a male was arrested and convicted,” she said.
Based in Plympton, Ms Phillips uses her skills to help seekers across the globe, and the stories she sees range from the average Aussie, to celebrities and even the Royals.
Leanne Winston
Mount Barker
After years of knowing she was different as a child, things came to a head when Leanne Winston was pregnant with her eldest daughter at 27.
“Spirit became more intense, I could now see them in their psychical bodies as they were before their passings. From there, the communication became more regular and intense,” she said.
Clients have come to see Ms Winston, now 50, in their times of grief, as well as coming to her for help with cold cases, missing people and life guidance.
“Some clients get closure by getting answers while connecting with a passed loved one. Clients find healing in their grief at times by just knowing their loved ones are at peace and out of pain,” she said.
Ms Winston said she is based in Mount Barker but helps people from all over SA and the world.
Tanya Hardie
Blakeview
Tanya Hardie realised her gifts from an early age. She recalls being visited by angels and elemental spirits as well as knowing things about people and circumstances before they had happened.
At age 19 she was guided by her local spiritualist church to realise her abilities and expand her skills.
“With the passing of my son in 2008 I was catapulted out into the open where I could not hide anymore, nor did I want to. This set me on my path to do my readings, healings and spiritual guidance,” she said.
Ms Hardie, 50, helps clients by teaching them to connect with their own power, to harness and protect their energy. She also connects with passed loved ones and guides clients with the knowledge she receives through spirits and guides.
“At the end of the day, the reward for me is the love, gratitude, and appreciation from the
people I’ve helped to move forward, to let go, to see their own worth, to grow, and to know
that I’m only a guide and that they truly hold the power of their own happiness,” she said.
