Supermarket price hikes on the way following wild weather

Aussies are being warned to expect more price hikes when they do their supermarket shopping in the coming months.

Experts warn food shortage could get worse

Experts are warning supermarkets will soon experience further food shortages as weather conditions give growers a hard time.

As a third La Nina weather system brings heavy downpours and more wild weather, food producers and growers are struggling to keep up with demands.

Foods like poultry, leafy greens, berries and grains are set to rise, with the price of dairy products said to rise up to 30 per cent.

The flow on result will mean supermarkets need to hike up their checkout prices, adding to the cost of living crisis.

As global supply chains continue to slow, inflation and extreme weather events like the La Nina system are forcing producers to pass on added costs to supermarkets, and in turn, to everyday customers.

Ash Salardini, chief economist of the National Farmers Federation said farms are experiencing worker shortages across processing and manufacturing areas.

"If we don't address that food availability and affordability it's going to be an issue for 12 months to 24 months," Mr Salardini said.

It seems the surge has already begun, with the price of oil up by 33c, milk up 16c and margarine up another 15c.

But with the La Nina weather seeing meteorologists expecting floods, more produce could be skyrocketing in price.

"If we have floods in the next three to six months or if it rains at the wrong time, for example during harvest, expect to see shortages or price rises," Mr Salardini said.

Shoppers are advised to purchase fruits and vegetables that are in season to save money and ensure supply.
